What Are Your Income Alternatives?
September 22nd, 2009 by Nigel Evans
It is certainly true that when things are going along nicely, few of us think about what could happen if the economy went south. Just look at the number of people who do not save any money from month to month and may have a “devil may care” approach towards the future. Most people will remember what happened during the great recession of 2008 and 2009, however as suddenly people started to think about income alternatives like they never had before.
Have you ever heard about saving for a rainy day? Most people had, but didn’t, but when the great recession arrived and the unemployment rate more than doubled, this was a stark reminder that they may have no income alternatives. What would happen if they were unable to pay their rent or mortgage or the other family commitments as they had no alternative plans. Now, suddenly it was time to look into those alternatives.
Shocks can turn to disbelief and anger and ultimately realization, when your hours are significantly cut back or you even lose your old job. Now is the time to look inwardly and to assess the situation. Many people, however, find that after the shock wears off they are able to itemize certain skills or assets that they have and come up with a plan for the future. It may take this process, but most people are surprised.
If you are suddenly faced with a money crunch, take time to let your mind wander back to your school or college days. Remember what you used to be good at back then. You might’ve been a good writer or have been good at organizing things. What about sports – were you any good at a particular type? When analyzing income alternatives today, try and use some of those skills to best effect.
Those who are good at writing will find that there are a number of outlets available to them online. Look at the different services and programs that allow you to present your material to interested parties. A website or a news organization might be interested and financial opportunities could await you. There is such a thirst for information on the Internet that webmasters are always looking for people who can write good content at reasonable rates. Why not make this one of your income alternatives as you seek regular and reliable options.
The field of Internet marketing is a huge opportunity, as revenues can be raised through correctly monetized websites and blogs. Generally, people set a site up to provide much sought-after information and valuable resources for people who are looking for solutions to their problems. You can do this too, by selling your own products or services that you come up with or by acting as an affiliate, effectively being the middleman between the buyer and seller.
Freelancers do particularly well and this may be one of your income alternatives. Online sites such as rentacoder.com, odesk.com or elance.com are very well respected and structured sites which bring together those who have a talent or service of some kind with those who are looking for exactly the same thing.
As you are looking for income alternatives, make sure that you cut down on all nonessential spending, consolidate as much as you can and get rid of all those things that you can find which you do not use any more. You will be surprised what you are hanging onto which would be of value to someone else.
